Irrational: I don't like the Orange

I don’t like the GWS Giants.

    Not a little bit.
    Not “I respect them but…”
No. I just don’t like the Orange. I know I say our games about Freo and West Coast are the most important each year, but really...it's the game(s) against the Giants.

And remember, this isn’t some knee-jerk reaction to one bad loss or a petty grudge. This is a well-earned, well-stoked fire that’s been burning ever since they poached Cal Ward and Ryan Gryphon elected to move North.

    Other reasons?
    1. They’re the AFL’s Golden Child

Handed draft picks like lollies at a kids party. Priority picks, pre-list access, mini-drafts, zone picks, compensation picks for picks they didn’t even use. The rest of us are out here scrapping for every inch, and they got handed a mansion with a pool and told “go nuts.” I will admit they have treated their draft picks with a bit more respect than Gold Coast...but being better than the Suns should not be applauded.
    2. They Somehow Think They’re Battlers

Every time you hear from them, it’s the same narrative: “Nobody respects us… the AFL doesn’t help us… we’ve had it tough.”
Spare me. You were given more help than any team in history. You’ve never played in front of a real crowd unless you were being booed by ours.

To be fair, Blacktown is a city of battlers. Sadly, no-one from Blacktown knows the Giants are (sorta) based there.
    3. The Toby Greene Factor

I do NOT like Toby Greene.
    The end.
    4. The 2016 Prelim

    You knew it was coming.
That was our fairytale. They were the AFL's pick. We were the people’s pick. They had the headlines. We had the heart. And watching us beat them—there—will always be a top-3 moment of my footy life.

But they’ve never let it go. And neither have we.
    5. They Still Don’t Belong

    The colours look good.
    The song is anthemic.
    Their sorta fun social media.

Doesn't matter. No one watches and no-one cares.

Blood and Boots vs Focus Groups.
The hell with strategy and game-plans. Let's just win this week.
What should I tell her? She's going to ask.

I can't disagree with any of the sentiment expressed.

While they have been better than Gold Coast they have still been more a development side for the preferred Melbourne Clubs. How many have the Alleged Big Clubs got from them.

We actually now have more ex GWS players than at anytime but we only get them via an interim club. Treloar via Collingwood, Lobb via Fremantle and now Kennedy via Carlton.

GWS doesn't like us either and is also scared of us. They have wanted to beat us since the Preliminary defeat but struggle. Since that awful 2019 final, they have beaten us once in the next nine games. That was a disaster in 2023 when we had two key position players go down at Ballarat, and we lost by 5 points, which in effect kept us out of the finals.

In those last 10 games, we have beaten them twice in Canberra, however, this year is very different. We are the younger team as they have many older heads. I would have thought they should have beaten Adelaide last weekend, but the loss makes me confident we can win this one.

Helen Garner’s description of Toby Greene is just perfect: “something about the shape of his head, lioe a tilted olive, and his vain little walk undermines my admiration for his dazzling play. And I don’t know how to forgive or forget his past brutality. Personally, I will always hate his guts for gouging Bont’s eyes and kicking Luke Dahlhaus in the jaw, but what a player he is.”

I reckon they're great and I've developed a genuine appreciation for them. Some of their clash strips are awesome and they've got a great social media department.

Not sure how much orange tsunami is truly accurate but they're a fun surge team to watch and I love Toby Greene. I get he's a serial pest and he kicked Dahl in the face and clobbered Daniel in a marking contest but man we'd love him if he was in our side.

I reckon it's great we have such a strong rivalry with them. Its no coincidence we keep playing them on ANZAC day.

GWS are good for us and we've been good for them.
But then again, I'm an Internet poster and Bevo is a premiership coach so draw your own conclusions.

Could not agree more. While it feels like the players have lessened their distain with each passing game since 2016 and 2018. I absolutely hate that club, and I don’t think that will change at least not while that grub Toby Greene is still around. Every year I look forward to these games and hope we absolutely destroy them

They’re the Marvel Cinematic Universe of the AFL, designed as a content mine to feed morons like me slop to watch at 4:15 on a Saturday between two real games, rather than an actual football club supported by people I know that I can give shit to when we invariably beat them. I can't bring myself to care about them because they don’t care about themselves.

I actually like GWS. We finally have a proper rivalry.

They also gave me my favourite moment watching the Dogs the 2016 prelim.

Clay Smith's brutal take down of Ryan Griffin, allowing the ball to spill free for a Bulldog goal, is my most treasured memory of 65 years of being a supporter. Best game ever, it even exceeded the GF in my estimation.

Not sure what part of the OP is irrational. Seems like solid truth to me.

Yep, hate them with a passion

Never has a greater banner ever been created by McGinlay: "Our club was born in blood and boots, not in AFL focus groups"

Hard to like them from the moment Cameron thuggishly broke JJs collarbone. I'd add to what MJP has said that and apart from Green, they never get suspended and it took long enough for Greens offences to get to the point that the league couldnt keep looking the other way they rarely get suspended - the league has always wanted to win - its been transparent and pathetic. Their chairman is a tool.

They should be eternally grateful to us for beating them in that prelim - you dont become a real club without having to actually earnt it - we gave them a chance

It's in the top 10 of favourite ever moments for mine. Kolyniuk taking on Graham Wright is an irrational favourite, being an otherwise nondescript H&A game.

Biggs, Morris/Boyd, Picken busting the dam wall, Bont taking down Hodge, Roughead long bomb off one step against West Coke - 2016 finals series was full of iconic moments. So was 2021, the best one being Joe Dirt's left-footer against Brisbane then doing the ice in the veins.

They just don't move the dial in anger for me, just ambivalent to their existence.
