    PORT SCOUT IN DOGS' SIGHTS

PORT Adelaide's Michael Regan has emerged as a frontrunner for the Western Bulldogs' list strategy role.
The Dogs have changed their list and recruiting department in the off-season, with list boss Sam Power being appointed football manager at the club. Power will retain control of contracts and some list management duties in the position.
The Bulldogs were set to elevate Dom Milesi to the new position, which takes in being recruiting manager as well as list management, before Milesi quit the Dogs to take on a new position outside of the AFL industry.
Regan, who has been at Port Adelaide for more than a decade, was in the running for West Coast's list boss role last year and is an analytic specialist, having come from a data background.
He has been in Port's recruiting and list team working under list boss Jason Cripps and recruiting manager Geoff Parker.
Regan is among a handful of candidates the Bulldogs have interviewed as they get close to making an appointment on the eve of the under-18 season beginning. – Callum Twomey

The restructure is interesting. Rather than a list manager (Power) and head recruiter (Milesi), Power as head of footy (Grant role) will retain some of the list manager duties whilst the new recruiting manager (TBA, was to be Milesi) will also share some of the list management duties.

All roads lead to Port Adelaide.

Step one: List manager Michael Regan
Step two: Recruit Ken Hinkley as chief cheer leader and boundary stalker
Step three: Zac Butters chooses the bulldogs .
More of an In Bruges guy?

I used to play footy with Regan. Seemed pretty switched on and family is very sport oriented, his brother has had a series of cool jobs in i think Fitness and Conditioning in the states with New York Jets and Mets and maybe Miami Dolphins.

I kind of got the vibe that Michael thought i wasn't a particularly great player which bodes well for his talent ID ability.

I'm assuming this is tongue in cheek but Regan family were lovely. All very personable, I ran into the dad last year and he remembered me extremely well despite not having heaps to do with eachother in the past.

One of those families that really embraces the footy club and gets involved off field, they were all heavily involved with the clubs "Football for disability" side as well, which meant the weekend often involved the two boys playing in different sides (seniors and reserves), then FIDA as well, plus when Port were in town they ran the bench/were trainers.

That seems to be a speculation that data driven people can't look past the data.

Any data to help back up that speculation?

Great to hear. Sounds a good guy.

I was being tongue in cheek in that being 'data driven' was the main feature picked out in the article. To me, the data side is over emphasised in almost every sphere these days. Good judgement embraces so much more and is quite rare.

My imagined ideal for a recruiter is to be a good judge of people, their football capabilities and potential. Being good with stats. would be ancillary to that.

Bulldogs name former Power recruiter in key off-field role

Shuffling of list management jobs around the league continues as Dogs fill important position

THE WESTERN Bulldogs have appointed Port Adelaide recruiter Michael Regan as their new player acquisition and strategy manager

The data specialist, who has been at the Power for more than a decade, has won the role as the Dogs settle their recruiting and list department after a series of changes in the off-season.

AFL.com.au revealed last week that Regan was the frontrunner for the Dogs' role after running second in the race for West Coast's list manager position early last year.

He will take on the recruiting and list role in a reshaped department following list manager Sam Power's elevation to be the Dogs' football manager and the departure of recruiting manager Dom Milesi to a role outside of the AFL industry. The Dogs also added to their department by bringing in former Geelong, Richmond and Carlton recruiter Luke Williams to their scouting team.

Regan has been a part of the Port Adelaide recruiting division which has aggressively approached list management and drafting calls in recent years, leading the club to three preliminary finals in the past five years.

His appointment comes at the back end of the recruiting merry-go-round for now, following Collingwood poaching Geelong recruiter and former Magpie Shane O'Bree for its recruiting manager role.

West Coast, Carlton and Richmond are among the other clubs to have made changes to their recruiting teams in recent months.
