Or maybe they were living in Braybrook when he started playing. Or it could have been that Braybrook was the better club to play for.

Charlie Sutton travelled from Spotswood to Braybrook to play, and Wally Donald lived in Kingsville and played for Braybrook so EJ wouldn't have been the only player who didnt live in Braybrook.
Charlie Sutton didn't play for Braybrook. Wally Donald played at Braybrook in an exchange with another Bulldogs player in Reg Egan, who went to play with West Footscray. Braybrook was a particularly strong District club and did attract many of its players from outside Braybrook itself. Hawkins Bisset Walker Brian Wilson Merrington Marsh and Gronewegen who all played at Footscray grew up in Braybrook from where they were recruited. With regards to Hansen Reserve, Keith Beamish, who was a member of our '61 Grand Final team, played with North Footscray in the late '50's.

Whitten grew up in the western suburbs of Braybrook and Footscray in Melbourne. As a youth he played for Braybrook on Saturdays and Collingwood Amateurs on Sundays; he was urged by the Collingwood Amateurs coach, Charlie Utting (a former Collingwood VFL star) to try out for the Collingwood team but was told later to come back in a few years after building up body strength. Within 12 months he was playing for Footscray, the team he had always supported.

      That was close.

        Re: North Footscray FC

I think Braybrook was probably just the club to play for. Ted's parents remained in Exhibition Street long after Ted Whitten Jnr was born. Stunningly, I read a quote from Doug Hawkins stating that he himself spent some time growing up in Exhibition Street and could recall kicking the footy in the street with Ted jnr as a kid. He said Ted used to visit his grandparents over the road and would always have the Dogs gear. Doug himself was a North fan as a kid and EJ Jnr lived in Altona. Doug moved around a bit as a kid - mainly around Braybrook and West Footscray.

So, funnily enough, EJ's family never left West Footscray for Braybrook, but Doug's family did leave Braybrook for West Footscray at one point!.... All next to North Footscray Footy Club.... Which is in southwest Footscray!

It's all becoming as clear as mud!!

I found that quite mind blowing! It was mentioned in the Foreword of Kevin Hillier's book "Like Father Like Son". P8.

In the late 50's early 60's Ted lived in Blackwood Street Yarraville opposite the Blackwood Street Primary School. As I went to that school I used to see him from time to time.

Does the suburb of Tottenham have residential areas. I'm pretty sure it is a industrial suburb. Braybrook is more residential. Are house prices in the Braybrook area increasing. I know Footscray, Yarraville etc is now quite expensive.

Yep, that was after he'd married. He also coached Yarraville on VFA GF day 1961 to the premiership. Ran a 'supermarket' on Hampshire Rd Sunshine in the 50's, too.

He moved from Yarraville to Altona.

Yeah it's mostly industrial but it does have a few houses. It also had a greyhound track until the 1950s or thereabouts. White City. It's where Olex Cables now is. There was a White City train stop between Totty and Sunshine Stations.

Tottenham Station has just been given a facelift. The area will pick up, but it's still a bit rough around the edges. Braybrook has, in my opinion, the biggest upside in Melbourne. Huge blocks with quite low value housing on them. Easily toppled and replaced. Which is something that's being commonly done. It's 9-11kms from the city and 500-600sqm blocks. Also the northern part of Braybrook around the footy ground and river has been developed now. The only downside is that it's still a bit rough and it's a bit of a trudge to train stations (Sunshine or Tottenham). Over the next 20 years Braybrook will skyrocket.

Enough people lived in Tottenham for two schools and a bloody big pub. Juat about every band in Australia played at the Totty at some stage. Cold Chisel, The Angels, MEO245, it was huge.

I went to Totty nth primary school in the early 70s was always under the impression Tottenham wasn't actually a suburb, just some schools, cricket club and the train station were called Tottenham.
I worked in the jac paper / avery dennison place across the road from the station up to 6 years ago when it closed and it was west footscray as an address.

Actually bugger all people lived in Tottenham proper. It's really just one side of one residential street which is called Tottenham (the west side of Sredna is Totty and the east side West Footscray.) That really makes it some factories and about 35 houses.

Tottenham Station itself is technically in West Footscray. I think the Tottenham Hotel might've sat outside of Tottenham. The whole area of Tottenham Station is widely referred to as Tottenham, however. JAC/Avery Dennison was east of Sredna St so certainly in West Footscray.

However many people live there they do a fantastic job fielding a team in the English Premier League.
