I think it's a smart move by Merrett, presuming that he is verbalising the thoughts of at least some of his teammates. In a text, I’m told Merrett said his luncheon comments were quoted out of context , and he would be excited if the Bombers legend wins the role.

spotted out the front of Jimmy Rowes a lifetime ago. He was absolutely off his face, a rabid dog who’d put too much of something up his nose. I went to a call one day where some knuckleheads/kids poured petrol down the tram tracks on a sloping hill in the middle of the night. When we turned up it was like the Delorean had just hit 88mph and all that was left was the flaming tracks.
